Theater at Washington and Lee

About the Department

For the first time in the history of Washington and Lee University, Dance is being offered as an academic discipline within the Department of Theater!

With the invaluable assistance of committed alumnae, alumni and friends of the University, and with guidance from administrators and colleagues who recognize the importance of the Arts in a comprehensive liberal arts education, the Theater Department will build on the foundation established from many years of student participation in W&L Dance.

Over the next few years, we intend to provide courses on all levels in the history and practice of ballet and modern dance, to enhance the quality of dance performances, to increase student attendance at dance events, to invite accomplished professional dancers and choreographers to campus, and to create consistent opportunities for students to study and practice the Art of Dance.

With the opening of Wilson Hall and the completion of a vision that has become The Lenfest Center for the Arts, Dance as an academic discipline can finally take its rightful place with Music, Art and Theater in providing an education in the Arts at Washington and Lee that is unrivaled among our peer colleges and universities.
