Maria Bauman graduated cum laude with a B.F.A. in Dance and English from the Florida State University. A native of Jacksonville FL, she began her dance training at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts under the tutelage of Dr. Phyllis Penney and Rhonda Stampalia. She is also trained in the art of capoeira, a Brazilian martial art that employs dance.
Upon relocating to New York, Bauman joined acclaimed modern dance company, Urban Bush Women. She toured throughout the United States and abroad with the company, both performing and teaching.

Bauman has also been Artistic Director Jawole Zollar’s choreographic assistant for numerous residencies, including Emory University in Atlanta and Towson University in Maryland. In addition, Bauman plays an active role in planning and facilitating UBW’s Dialogic Learning and Entering Community workshops.

Recently Bauman transitioned from being a full company member with UBW to being a teaching artist with the company. She is thrilled to be working with Nia Love as a member of Blacksmith’s Daughter! Bauman also apprentices with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company and works with Adele Myers and Dancers. She travels throughout the United States as a freelance choreographer and teacher, and has created dances for Spelman College, New Jersey Governor’s School of the Arts and PACE Center for Girls, among others.
Bauman also presents her own choreography, and will next be featured as part of the BAAD! Ass Women Festival at the Bronx Academy of Art and Dance in March.
