The Golden Goose

W&L Theater presents a touring children's spring production of The Golden Goose to the local elementary schools of the area. The tour will begin May 11-12 and May 16 -- 19. The Golden Goose is based on the story by the Brothers Grimm and will be directed by Lisa Miller '05 in fulfillment of her senior thesis.

The Golden Goose is the story of a young man who is rewarded for kind deeds and hard work with the gift of an enchanted golden goose. The young man carries the goose through the countryside where all sorts of greedy and otherwise unsavory characters become stuck to it. He passes by a castle where a sullen princess lives. Her father has promised her hand in marriage to any man who could make her laugh. Our hero, with his captive procession in tow, makes her burst forth with laughter and wins her hand.

This story has many moral messages that coincide with the educational SOL "Character Counts" initiative. The young man is a hard worker and is kind to a person in need. He is steadfast and strong. He creates a heroic image that is an important one for children to see. He is not perfect, but through his hard work, humility, and good deeds, he still wins the day and the heart of his fair princess.

Touring performances begin May 11 at 9 a.m. and are scheduled for Central and Effinger Elementary Schools on the Central School stage. On May 12, the troupe will perform at Fairfield Elementary at 9 a.m. On May 18, the troupe will perform at Enderly Heights at 9 a.m. On May 19, the troupe will perform at Kling Elemtary School at 9:30 a.m.

The entire performance of The Golden Goose, including an interaction period following the performance, will be no more than 50 minutes.
