The Tamer Tamed

The W&L theater department announces The Tamer Tamed with performances on May 20, 21, 23, 24 at 8 p.m. and May 22 at 2 p.m. in the Johnson Theatre under the direction of Dr. Kimberly Jew, the theater department's newest faculty member.

John Fletcher's The Tamer Tamed is a wonderfully clever sequel to Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. In this re-working, Petrucchio, the shrew-master from Shakespeare's play, meets his match in his new wife, Maria, a strong woman who refuses to play the submissive partner to his male bravado. Romantic intrigues, drunken dances and witty language --and a little True Love--help depict a world of great change, one in which the tamer is tamed and the fairer sex wins the day.

The Tamer Tamed will feature colorful period costumes, an open stage setting, and a lively cast of students eager to produce this often overlooked dramatic text, one which in its day, was even more popular than its Shakespearean original.

Tickets are required for this performance and go on sale Monday, April 25, 2005.
