by Federico Garcia Lorca
directed by Kimberly Jew
This short and intense drama tells the story of a recently widowed mother, Bernarda Alba, who imposes an eight-year mourning period on her five daughters. Set in rural Spain at the turn of the century, Lorca paints a scene of severe family tension as the passions and desires of the imprisoned young women lead them to states of desperation and anxiety. Bernarda Alba's attempts to save the reputation of her family ultimately self-destructs, ending in chaos, violence and suicide.
